Brazil's Pará state government, through water company Cosanpa, will invest 225mn reais (US$119mn) in 2012 to improve water supply in six municipalities, a Cosanpa spokesperson told BNamericas.

"The six municipalities are Belém, Ananindeua, Marituba, Alenquer, Moju and Castanhal," the spokesperson said.

Tentative plans call for some 148mn reais to be invested in Belém, Ananindeua and Marituba. The municipalities of Castanhal, Moju and Alenquer have been allocated 45mn reais, 19mn reais and 12mn reais respectively.

The state legislature has authorized Cosanpa to obtain financing from federal savings bank Caixa Econômica Federal (CEF), and the state government will provide 22.7mn reais in counterpart funding.

The projects now have to be approved by governor Simão Jatene. This should take place during the first week of October, according to the official.

The work falls under phase II of the country's growth acceleration plan (PAC).

Pará state has 51.4% urban potable water supply coverage and 2.4% wastewater collection service.
